CHAPTER TWELVE

Noelle woke up exhausted late Sunday morning. Yesterday, she and Stephanie had purchased so much stuff that they had to make two trips to Stephanie’s house to store them. She stretched a couple of times and climbed out of bed. Barbara thought she was in control of the families getting their goods, but things had backfired. Some families would get more than they asked.

She thanked God for that blessing. Noelle really didn’t have an excuse for not going to church on a regular basis. Knowing Nathan was there made her want to go to be close to him. He had invited her twice and never again, so Sunday was the only day they didn’t see each other.

Her Christmas tree had been bare for weeks because she had been so busy, so Noelle tackled that task first. Nathan continued to dominate her thoughts until her heart wanted to scream, ‘He’s the one! He’s the one you love.’ The admission frightened her. She had never been in love before. Now what?

What were the stats of women thinking they had found the right one and being wrong? Every day, she came face-to-face with home situations where mothers had love and lost, and their children had suffered for it. If she did a survey, what advice would they give her? Her heart and head battled for control all afternoon, and when Nathan called, she wondered if she had conjured him up. The soothing sound of his voice shooed away the emotional fears she'd experienced earlier.

“Hey, babe. Want some company?”

Closing her eyes, she grinned. “Always, if that company is you.” The giddiness she felt at the thought of seeing him was overpowering. The many hours they had spent shopping together yesterday seemed so long ago.

By the time Nathan arrived, it had started snowing. Although no accumulation was predicted, the flakes were heavy when she greeted him at the door with a kiss, their first kiss. Although she initiated it, Nathan took over and engulfed her with such tenderness Noelle thought she might collapse, but his strong arms around her waist held her steady.

“God has answered my prayers,” he teased, panting.

“And what are they?” She stepped out of his embrace, so he could remove his hat, scarf, and coat.

“You.” He kissed the tip of her nose before linking his fingers with hers and allowed her to lead him from the foyer. “It seems strange not to see chaos in your living and dining rooms.”

“I can thank you and your beautiful niece for that.” As they reclined on her sofa, she whispered, “I’m so glad to see you.” She closed her eyes and offered him a brief kiss and sat back. “Thanks for thinking of me.”

He stroked her cheek with the back of his hand. “Baby, I always think about you.”

She smiled. “But you spend Sundays with your family.”

Nathan leaned closer, coaxing her into another kiss. How could a man with so much strength give the softest kisses? She was in a daze when he mumbled something against her lips.
